The short answer
The documents depend on the program. Housing and benefit applications may ask about identity, income, housing costs and household members. Start with the agency's own checklist and ask what to do if something is missing. MNbenefits allows applicants to upload supporting documents after starting an application.
A folder to prepare before you call
MNbenefits names pay stubs, rent receipts and bank statements as examples of supporting documents. The list below is a preparation aid, not a rule that every applicant must supply every item.
Tell the agency which program you are applying for. Ask which household members need documentation, how recent it must be and whether a copy is acceptable. A benefits application, a landlord's screening and a Coordinated Entry assessment are different processes.
- Identity and household information: ask which identification and household details the specific program accepts.
- Income: gather recent pay information or benefit letters if requested; ask how to report no income or irregular earnings.
- Housing costs: have the lease, rent receipts, a statement of the amount owed or utility bills available where relevant.
- Urgent paperwork: keep landlord notices, agency letters and court papers with their dates and envelopes.
- Program-specific records: ask whether disability verification, custody information or other evidence is actually required before collecting it.
If a document is missing
Contact the agency promptly. Explain which item is missing, why it is difficult to obtain and when you might be able to get it. Ask whether an alternative is accepted and whether the agency can help obtain verification.
Do not assume a handwritten statement, a shelter letter or a document in another person's name will always be accepted. Ask the worker about your case and record the answer. If there is a deadline, confirm it rather than assuming that asking a question extends it.
MNbenefits lets you return to upload documents. That makes it possible to add records later, but it does not remove a program's verification requirements. Confirm what is needed to complete the application.
Keep the appointment unless the agency tells you to reschedule. Bring what you have, identify the missing item and agree on a next step.
Language, names and contact information
If a document is in another language, ask whether a translation is needed and how to arrange it. If names appear differently across records, point this out and ask what explanation or supporting record is needed.
If you do not have a stable mailing address, ask the receiving agency how to receive letters safely. Confirm any arrangement with a shelter, trusted person or mailing service before using that address.
Tell the worker your preferred language and whether you need help reading a notice. Ask for the next step and deadline to be explained in a way you understand. Keep the agency's contact details with the letter.
Send records through the right channel
Use the receiving agency's official upload page or another method it has confirmed. Check the website address before signing in. Keep copies and submission confirmations somewhere you can access securely.
ApexRise's general contact channel is not a document portal. Do not email Social Security numbers, immigration records, medical records or detailed case files to start a conversation with us.
If a program requests sensitive information, ask why it is needed, who will see it and how to send it. For questions about the immigration consequences of a benefit, seek advice from a qualified immigration attorney or accredited legal representative. Requirements differ, so avoid relying on a general promise about eligibility.
After you submit
MNbenefits explains the interview and follow-up steps. Keep your confirmation, check for messages and ask the county or Tribal agency for a case update before submitting a duplicate application.
For a Housing Support application, review the program and approved-setting requirements. If you need a housing assessment, use Hennepin County's Coordinated Entry route. If you lost HSS, understand the available next steps before starting a new application.
Make a short record of the date, the agency, the worker's name and the next action. This is especially useful when more than one person is helping. If you receive a decision you disagree with, read the notice's review or appeal instructions promptly.

Questions people ask
- Can I add documents after applying through MNbenefits?
- Yes. MNbenefits has an upload option for supporting documents after an application is submitted. Ask your county or Tribal worker which records are required and when they are due.
- What if I have no income?
- Tell the agency and ask how that program verifies no income. Do not invent earnings or assume one type of statement is accepted by every program.
- How recent should pay stubs or bank statements be?
- Ask the receiving agency for its required date range. Different programs and circumstances can require different periods.
- Do all documents need to be in English?
- Ask the agency whether translation is required and how it can be arranged. Do not pay for a translation before confirming what is needed.
- Should I email my documents to ApexRise?
- No. Do not send sensitive records through ApexRise's general email or inquiry channel. We would first discuss consent and an appropriate method if information is needed.
- Is this checklist a guarantee that my application is complete?
- No. It helps you prepare questions. Only the agency handling the application can confirm its requirements and decide eligibility.
